Puppy Love
Years ago, after Mike and I brought Ethan home from the hospital, our dog (Logan) had a difficult time adjusting to the new addition. After months of struggling with Logan's anxiety and self-mutilation, we made the difficult decision to give him up for adoption. Thankfully, he's been welcomed into the home of a loving family without children, so he can be the primary focus of his new owners.
But, the last three years have been the longest Mike has gone without a dog in his life... ever!
The conversation to get a puppy began two years ago. Then, last year we decided when Ethan turns 5 in 2014, we will adopt a new dog for our family.
... We couldn't wait that long!
Loki joined our family in January. He was just 8 weeks old at the time, and Mike drove 10+ hours in a snow storm to pick him up from the breeder in Macedon, NY. Loki made the trek home without a whimper or bark. Hmmm... was it going to be this easy, for real?
Yes. Loki is so awesome! We all love him tremendously. Loki has brought an insurmountable level of joy to our family in just one month. It is amazing, really.
He learned his name in the first week. He is predictable (usually) with his bathroom needs. He LOVES to cuddle and be cuddled. Ethan and Loki are best brothers already. In just 4 weeks, Loki has almost tripled in size and can run faster than any of us (which leads to giggles, and some cries of frustration, from Ethan almost daily). He goes into his crate without much whining, and sleeps through the night! He plays with his toys most of the time, but is learning every day which things he cannot chew on in the house. Loki's tail wags upon seeing or hearing any of us, and he aches to be touched and held. It's so great!
Puppy love - I understand where the saying comes from, now. It really is amazing how one can love an animal so much. This has been the best decision we've made as a family in a long time.
Without realizing we had a small gap in our family, Loki has filled the void for each of us individually. Ethan now has a 'brother', which he is thrilled about. Mike has another dog. I have a tiny little creature to cuddle and love and take care of (without going through the birthing process one more time).
... We feel whole.
