Political PooPoo
It's that time of year... when 5 or 6 campaign ads are run in the span of 1 minute during television commercials. Interestingly - or sadly, as it may be - I have NO IDEA what these candidates are running for or what they stand for. I made a point to watch several commercials this week just to see if I could figure out who to vote for in the upcoming election. Unfortunately, I still have no clue.
Don't vote for Joe - he has raised his pay in the last few years.
Don't vote for Cathy - she sides with Obama in 90% of her voting history.
Don't vote for Bob - he isn't Christian.
What? Seriously? If you can't tell me why I should vote for you - and not why I shouldn't vote for someone else - then stop wasting my time. Please. I see this year after year, and it's getting worse. The music they play for each ad is the same dreary, haunting melody. The attempt to invoke fear from the words splashed across the screen is the same embarrassing attempt at scaring us into voting for the person running the ad.
Not ONCE did any of the commercials I saw explain to me why I should be voting for a particular candidate. How am I supposed to make an informed decision? Please - someone help me here.
If certain voters only get their information from television - not newspapers, the Internet, etc. - then the least a political candidate could do is explain their platform, their opinions, and their goals if they were to get elected. The LEAST they could do.
(sigh) This craziness is why I have yet to vote. I'm not proud of that statement, but it is the unfortunate truth. I had every intention of voting in the last Presidential election, but I had to leave town unexpectedly to be with my family during my grandmother's passing. That election campaign was the first time I could remember the candidates making a sincere effort at educating voters about their individual platforms. And although many of us likely don't agree with 100% of a candidate's goals once in office, I had actually made a decision of for whom I would vote. Finally, after years of passing up that right as an American citizen, I was ready to share my voice.
I'm waiting for that chance again - come on candidates... give it to me.
